Instructor: Mrs. Daniela Esposito
The National Honor Society recognizes superior scholarship, outstanding service, leadership and character. Students must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.4 at the end of sophomore or junior year to be eligible for selection to the National Honor Society. The selection of members to the chapter shall be by a majority vote of the faculty council consisting of five faculty members appointed annually by the principal. Induction to the NHS takes place in the fall. Members of the NHS wear a distinguishing stole at graduation exercises and receive diplomas indicating NHS membership. Any member of NHS who fails to live up to the prescribed standards will be asked to resign. Possible reasons for removal from NHS include cheating, plagiarism and/or other serious disciplinary issues.

CANDY SALES
The Candy Sales drive has kicked off to a great start!  Already, some of the members on NHS have sold all of their candy.  For some selling tips, perhaps you can ask your church community if they would like to purchase candy or speak to a manager at your local grocery store to see if you could set up a table over the weekend.  Be sure that when you sell the candy, inform the purchaser that they money is going to a great cause.   All of the money raised will be used toward an incoming students tuition scholarship.

Blood Drive
The Blood Drive is coming up and anyone with any questions about their eligibility to donate blood can call (866) 236-3276!
Next Meeting!
There will be a National Honor Society meeting after school in the cafe for ALL members February 8th, 2012!
If you cannot attend please speak to Mrs. Esposito or bring a written note from a parent to one of the officers!

MEMBERSHIP OBLIGATIONS
Membership Obligations

First, and foremost, all members must continue to demonstrate the qualities of scholarship, service, leadership, and character that qualified her for membership in the National Honor Society.

GPA:
To maintain membership in the National Honor Society you must maintain at least a 3.4 cumulative grade point average.  Failure to do so will result in an invitation to explain any extenuating circumstances to the Faculty Advisory Board and possible dismissal.  Your GPA will be verified after the 1st Semester of your Senior Year.  Returning seniors will be notified at the beginning of their Senior Year if they are in danger of failing to meet this obligation.

Service Hours:
Members are responsible for completing hours of service within specific categories.  You must complete hours of independent community service and you must complete hours of NHS sponsored service. This requirement is to prevent individuals from volunteering all at once at the end of the school year.  (NOTE:  There are approximately eight months in the NHS calendar)  Please plan ahead when using your “free” months, predicting your busiest time and also when signing up to be on a specific committee)   Please refer to additional information available at the meetings regarding types of hours, reporting and verifying procedures and deadlines.

Member Meetings:
You are required to attend all mandatory member meetings, which are held every second Wednesday of each month in the cafeteria (*unless otherwise noted). It is understood that members of the National Honor Society are active in many other clubs, sports, and other activities.   Attendance at these meetings should take precedence over other regularly scheduled activities.  In the event of an emergency or legitimate need for missing the meeting, please contact the advisors within 2 days of missing the meeting to obtain the information given. Otherwise, your membership may be in jeopardy of being revoked. The complete attendance policy will be discussed in depth at the first member meeting.

SERVICE HOURS
NHS service hours are due on March 20th for all members of NHS.  The total number of hours is 10, 2 of which must be committee hours.  If you have any questions, please feel free to see any of the NHS officers or the head of your committee.  Additional service hour forms can be picked up in room 214 before or after school.
FYI:

History:

In 1921, the National Honor Society was formed as a result of a growing need for a national organization whose objectives were as follows: “to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the development of character in the nation's secondary schools.” Since its inception, the National Honor Society has proved to be a concrete means of promoting high school academic achievement and improving both the individual and the school.
 Initial Eligibility:

Students may become candidates for the National Honor Society in their junior and senior years. In order to become eligible, the student must have a GP A of 3.4 or higher. If the student has the required average, he or she must then complete a Student Activity Information Form/ Application/ Invitation, which is reviewed by the NHS Faculty Council. It is important to note that the 3.4 or higher is merely a prerequisite. The student is then closely evaluated on the selection criteria outlined below.

Selection Criteria:

Selection as a member of the National Honor Society is an honor and privilege, not a right. The privilege of membership is bestowed upon a student by the faculty of the school. It is important to recognize that the NHS membership is never granted solely on academic performance. More than an honor roll, the NHS also evaluates students on the components of leadership, service, and character.

 Obligations of Membership:

Once inducted as a member, the students are expected to maintain the standards by which they were selected (i.e. continued academic performance at or above an 3.4 GPA, continued involvement in service and leadership projects, and a continued presence as a positive role model to others). In addition, the NHS expects members to attend monthly meetings and participate in school and community service projects conducted by the society.
